Priestley wrote runaways, novels, articles, broadcasts and films.His mapwright, novelist, dramatist and critic skills brought him tobe known all around the dry land. He was born in Bradford in 1894 anddied at the well-established age of 90 (1984). He wrote a gibe offorty-nine plays though out his life. At the age of sixteen he waswriting pieces for Bradford newspapers. He in like manner served with theDevonshire regiment during World War 1. subsequently he received agovernment grant, which allowed him to move at the one-third Hall,Cambridge University. After this he finished his degree and paid ofhis grant by writing and moved to London to work as a reader andcr itic and start off his career in the literary profession. This startto his career set him up for a very prosperous future.The play An Inspector Calls was written when J.B. Priestley wasmiddle aged in 1944-45 in the winter, during the hold back of World War 2.He had lived through the pains of both world wars and he had survived.The play was set in1912 because it was before people were aware of the calamity and horror of the First World War. They thought that nothingwas going or could go wrong and peace was to be for all. Also becauseof the Titanics sinking, which had little relevancy to the play butcould prove his characters arrogance and their unbelievable surenessto be wrong, when they say that the Titanic is Absolutelyunsinkable. Also when a character mentions that fire and blood andanguish is to come, the logrolling family shrug it off and act arrogantto the fact that not everything is as well as it seems and that thisis a warning to them if they bother to listen. The basis of t he playis a fact that J.B. Priestly uses in all his works, that what one psyche does, doesnt just affect that person it affects everyonearound them too, this is J.B.Ps main concern. Which is what theBirling family stands to look at when they learn their lesson with thedisaster of Eva Smith. As well the time in which the play is set willshow that the following war will also show this point, as what thecountries leaders do effects the whole pastoral and the world.
